hydrogel cartilage repair

This is an interesting article about a new possible way to repair future meniscus repairs.

Typically meniscal repairs that require surgical treatment can be addressed in two ways: remove the torn meniscus (a partial meniscectomy) or repair the torn cartilage with sutures or tacks. A repair with sutures and tacks is generally only successful when the tear is on the outer edge where the blood supply is good. Anything in the center has to be removed completely. That is where this hydrogel technology is very interesting. It appears they plan to inject this material into the body, have it bond to the remaining cartilage, and provide a means to prevent pain from bone on bone rubbing during normal activities.

The gel is not in clinical trials yet, so I don’t expect it to come out anytime soon. But I am sure those tissue engineers are working on it.
